In the rugged, rolling landscapes surrounding Mirandela in northern Portugal, textile crafting still follows the honest rhythm of the region. As a young girl, Fátima learned the art of weaving from her mother - a craft she has now practiced with profound dedication for over 60 years. Across these decades, she has developed her very own technique, a distinctive design signature, and a deep understanding of working with raw wool. She is among the rare few who take sole responsibility for the entire creation process from raw fiber to final object.
It all begins directly with local shepherds, from whom Fátima sources freshly shorn wool. She accompanies the material through every single step: after cleaning and preparing the fibers, she uses her semi-industrial machines for carding, spinning, and weaving. She guides and operates these tools with masterly precision - not a single step is outsourced; no stage is surrendered to anonymous mass production. Every handle and every adjustment to the machines remains exclusively in her hands.
Fátima works exclusively with unbleached and undyed wool. The subtle color palette springs solely from the natural fleeces of the sheep: soft beige tones, warm honey hues, and nuanced shades of grey and earthy browns. Through this uncompromisingly natural approach, the raw, undeniable soul of northern Portuguese wool remains completely intact. The yarns retain their original tactile feel, their organic suppleness, and those lively irregularities that tell the story of the material's origin. On her machinery, these qualities unfold into sculptural rugs and cushions of extraordinary architectural depth.
